Job Summary:
The Certified Genetic Counselor will be responsible for providing support services for the MFM Geneticist and the women's health multidisciplinary team. They will provide genetic counseling and support to women and families during the prenatal period as well as preconception. They will assess and analyze data to provide individuals and family members with risk factors for specific disorders, syndromes and procedures. The genetic counselor will provide patients with education, treatment plans and reassurance regarding genetic and inherited risks, as well as facilitate and interpret all testing and results. They will facilitate and collaborate between multidisciplinary health care teams to counsel patients on all associated risks, benefits and limitations of testing during pre-pregnancy and prenatal periods.
Responsibilities:
- Provide genetic counseling to women and families during the preconception and prenatal period.
- Obtain medical and family histories.
- Discuss with the patient which prenatal testing options are appropriate, facilitate decision-making and provide informed consent for prenatal screening and invasive genetic testing including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis.
- Interpret genetic testing results and report results to patients in a timely manner.
- Communicate how inherited diseases and conditions may affect the patient and their families.
- Provide supportive counseling to patients after results are received.
- Work with women's health team, including physicians, mid-levels, perinatal coordinator, patient care coordinators, sonographers, and scheduling staff, to help coordinate care of pregnancy for fetuses with fetal anomalies and genetic conditions.
- Aide in transitioning care of our MFM patients to our pediatric genetic services after delivery.
- Coordinate patient activities for genetics department/clinics.
- Counsel patients and families seen at clinics.
- Provide genetic counseling service for families for whom molecular methods of diagnosis can offer carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis.
- Develop and provide educational services to health professionals and community groups..
- Provide educational opportunities for various learner types affiliated with an academic institution.
- Develop educational materials regarding genetic diseases for health professionals and the lay public.
- Maintains a professional appearance and a clean, safe environment.
- Respects patients by recognizing their rights; maintaining confidentiality.
- Utilizes technology, including specialized software as applicable, to maximize productivity.
- Develops and maintains electronic files as necessary.
- Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills; provides customer service; assists other support staff as necessary; collaborates with all levels of internal leadership, management, and staff as well as outside clients, vendors, and other external parties.
- Other duties as assigned by providers, directors and administration.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in biology, social science or related field. Master's degree in genetic counseling and appropriate certification. One year of relevant experience is preferred. New graduates are welcome to apply. Must maintain current licensure and certifications with state and accredited program.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in one of these required fields : biology, social science or related field. Master's degree in genetic counseling, required.
Licenses / Certifications:
ABGC certification, required.
