The Inova Schar Cancer Institute is seeking a full-time Genetic Counselor to join our team!

As a Genetics Counselor, you will effectively develop and manage pediatric or cancer genetics counseling programs for high risk patient populations. To help achieve our mission, you will provide clinical counseling and genetic testing services for individuals/families at risk for inherited diseases or hereditary cancers. Your ability to utilize standards, guidelines and protocols for the determination of care needs is of vital importance. Incorporating data and information to continuously improve services and practice while enhancing outcomes is expected. Utilizing a strong knowledge base expertise related to the program in order to effectively manage day to day operations is required.

Job Responsibilities 

• Attends routine Cancer Center meetings and serves as a clinical resource to the healthcare team.
• Performs inherited disease risk assessments and cancer risk assessments through review of family and medical histories.
• Provides individualized genetic counseling and testing to patients/families identified at increased risk for inherited cancers.
• Facilitates patient awareness and access to research and clinical studies.
• Demonstrates effective communication skills with all members of the healthcare team.
• Coordinates counseling sessions to meet the needs of patients, families and members of the healthcare team.
• Provides written communication to referring physicians regarding the consultation, test results and suggested medical management.
• Conducts ongoing promotion of genetics counseling program to physicians, patients and to the community by developing written materials and public presentations.

Qualifications

Experience:

• Experience in genetic counseling with experience in inherited disease genetics or cancer genetic counseling or have recently completed an inherited disease or cancer genetics clinical rotation.

Education:

• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

Certification:

• Board eligible for certification by the ABGC.
