In this position you will:

Coordinate all aspects of clinical genetic counseling, case management, and follow up.

Provide genetic education, assessment of risks and psychosocial status, immediate and ongoing support for families, discussion of testing options with consideration of financial aspects, coordination of testing, interpretation of laboratory results, communication of findings, and appropriate clinical documentation.

Participate in a general genetics with a primary focus on adult and/or pediatric genetics (depending on position) with opportunities for involvement in cardiology, neurology, cancer, cardiology, neurology, and prenatal genetic counseling, pediatric and prenatal genetic counseling.

Work closely with a team consisting of medical geneticists, genetic counselors, and support staff.

Coordinate and oversee clinical activities and service to ensure appropriate, quality and efficient service is delivered to patients and the medical community. Maintains open lines of communication with referring physicians, laboratories, consultants etc.

Coordinate yearly clinic schedule with the Medical Director and consultants from the University of Washington/Children’s hospital and medical center. Follows recommended guidelines for regional clinic consultant clinics.

Supervise data collection. Maintain, compile and report patient statistics for DOH Genetics Services section, State of Washington Birth Defects Registry, Board of Directors and other appropriate requesters.

Collaborate with appropriate personnel to provide input and review of the development of yearly clinic budget and contract(s) with the DOH Genetics Services Section and other contractors that have direct effect on patient services.

Conduct intake interviews, to include: Ascertain problem, concerns and reasons for referral. Take a complete medical and family history. Arrange for indicated lab tests and required medical records. Arrange for return visits as appropriate.

Prepare case summaries for physicians prior to patient visits when indicated. Assist at physician patient visits by reinforcing the explanation of the diagnoses, prognosis, genetic transmission, etc.

Identify psychosocial problems related to the genetic disorder. Follows-up management of psychosocial issues to include appropriate referrals.

Provide primary counseling to families in cases where the situation does not require a physician visit. Provide telephone and hospital consults as requested.

Prepare or assist in preparing a written summary of patient visit for the family and/or referring physician.

Reinforce and discuss information given at the primary counseling visit. Makes sure results of lab tests and other consultations are obtained and arranges for family to receive results in an appropriate manner.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:

Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling

Current Washington State Genetic Counselor license, provisional license, or the ability to obtain Washington State licensure.

Must obtain Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) certification through ABGC within 18 month of hire.
