Inova Fairfax Hospital has an opening for a full-time Clinical Pediatric Genetic Counselor to join a growing team of experienced genetic counselors and medical geneticists to provide risk assessment, testing, diagnosis and follow up for pediatric patients at risk for genetic disorders.
We are looking for someone who can work independently, but also with a medical geneticist to manage genetic education, risk assessment, counseling, coordination of genetic testing and support to patients and families. They will communicate between the patient and their multi-disciplinary care team in diagnosis and evaluations of such conditions. An ideal candidate can:
Professional Development: Ensure improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning. As needed guides the activities of junior staff, interns, etc. to promote maximum productivity. Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice, serves as a resource and mentor. Leadership skills demonstrated in decision making and problem solving.
Program Development and Management: Effectively develops and manages pediatric genetics counseling program for high risk patient population. Provide clinical counseling and genetic testing service for individuals and families at risk for inherited disease.
Quality/Best Practice: Utilizes standards, guidelines, and protocols for determination of care needs. Incorporates data and information to continuously improve services and practice to enhance outcomes.
Teamwork: Communicates effectively and work cooperatively with others. Has respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines. Uses an integrated approach to patient outcomes. Utilizes a strong knowledge base expertise related to the program in order to effectively manage the programs day to day operations.
Additional Information: Mentoring by experienced genetic counselors can be provided for new / recent graduates. Applicants should have a particular interest in developing and maintaining expertise in Pediatric genetic diseases. There is also the opportunity to participate in teaching and mentoring genetic counseling graduate students from local Master’s degree training programs and genetics fellows/residents from local fellowship training programs.
