Genetic Counselor

Job Summary:

Responsible for coordinating specialized genetic counseling services for identified patient populations by designing, developing, implementing and supervising patient/family genetic counseling programs. Collaborates closely with physicians and administration in developing and expanding the genetic program in providing excellent patient care within a multidisciplinary setting.

Job Duties:

1. Interviews patients, relatives and others to obtain and evaluate data on personal medical and family history.
2. Counsels and educates patients and families by explaining aspects of the disease, current state of knowledge, possible risks, potential diagnostic techniques and appropriate management.
3. Analyzes and interprets information about the genetic disorder and inheritance patterns to aid in diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
4. Collaborates with education team to develop and train students/staff.
5. Collaborates with research personnel in the identification of candidates for genetic research studies and facilities research projects.
6. Initiates, develops, and recommends changes to policies, procedures, and patient care activities in the program specific area of human/clinical genetics.
7. Participates in academic research initiatives.
8. Performs all other duties as assigned.
