POSITION TITLE: DIVISION TECHNICAL DIRECTOR MOLECULAR GENETICS DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY
Summary Description: The Technical Director for the Molecular Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory, DMC University Laboratories, will be responsible for the effective planning, organization and coordination of technical operations of the laboratory, including pre and post analytical functions. For individuals ABMGG certified/eligible in Laboratory Genetics or Genomics or dual certified in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Clinical Cytogenetics, there are opportunities to participate in the technical operations and case review in the DMCUL Cytogenetics Laboratory. The Technical Director will be responsible, in conjunction with other Technical Directors of the Division of Laboratory Genetics and Molecular Pathology, for ensuring that the technical operations of the laboratory, including quality, appropriateness and timeliness of laboratory services meets or exceeds standards required for excellence in patient care. The Technical Director will have professional and educational responsibilities. Salary is commensurate with ABMGG certification(s) and years of experience.
Minimum Qualifications: 1. Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics in Clinical Molecular Genetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. Individuals with dual certification in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Clinical Cytogenetics are also encouraged to apply. Salary considerations will be made for those individuals who are dual certified. 2. M.D. and/or Ph.D. in molecular genetics or related field 3. Previous experience in molecular diagnostics including inherited disease and somatic mutation testing.
Skills Required: 1. Expertise in molecular genetics, including basic molecular biology and molecular diagnostic methodologies. Previous experience in next generation sequencing is highly desired. Experience in cytogenetic techniques, including karyotype, FISH and array CGH, is also desired. 2. Analytical ability to serve in an advisory/consultative role for the selection of molecular genetics tests and the interpretation of clinical tests results. 3. Leadership skills and project management skills necessary to supervise and train laboratory technologists and technical specialists. 4. Communication and interpersonal skills for frequent contact with internal and external customers and laboratory personnel. A mastery of a variety of communication modalities is required to lead meetings, give formal presentations, author complex documents and manage professional relationships.
Position Responsibilities: 1. Provide support for mission, vision, values, goals and objectives of DMC University Laboratories and Tenet Healthcare Corporation. 2. Provide technical support to DMC University Laboratories. 3. Develop/implement new methodologies for clinical molecular genetic diagnostic tests, including the evaluation and selection of new equipment/replacement of existing equipment. Determine the analytical test performance characteristics for each new test system. Author new standard operating procedures and maintain/improve current protocols 4. Resolve technical problems in the laboratory related to test methodologies. 5. Assist in the maintenance of quality assurance and quality control as required to meet all criteria for continuing accreditation of federal, state, local and other accrediting agencies, such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Review the quality management documentation, including CAP checklist and proficiency test results annually. 6. Ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations within the laboratory division. 7. Review lab results and patient reports to ensure accuracy and provide interpretations. Review unusual test results, perform literature and data base reviews as necessary to provide correct interpretation. 8. As required, the technical director will contact the referring physician to obtain additional clinical information prior to performing the test or will call the referring physician or genetic counselor to provide the test results. The technical director will be available for consultation in the interpretation of clinical test results with clinicians. 9. In conjunction with the laboratory manager, supervisor and other technical directors, determine the priority of tests to be run each week. Supervise, train and evaluate laboratory technologists and technical specialists. 10. Supervise laboratory rotations of residents, fellows, and students. 11. Give lectures to medical technology/genetic counseling students and pathology/genetics residents and fellows.
