If you are looking for a challenging and stimulating role working autonomously as part of a multidisciplinary team and providing clinical excellence and improved outcomes for families this is a great opportunity. You will be a highly motivated and experienced genetic counsellor looking to further develop your skills & experience.
The NZ Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service (NZFGCS) is a national service specialising in the diagnosis and management of familial gastrointestinal cancer syndromes, with emphasis on reducing morbidity and mortality in families who are assessed to be at high risk.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of family history assessors, gastroenterologists, and colorectal surgeons and works closely with Genetic Health Services. The Service provides education, information and support to families, including medical management and identification of those at high risk and follow up for others within a family who may be at increased risk of cancer as well as long term follow-up of individuals via a colonoscopy surveillance programme.
As a Family History Assessor, you will:
Explore the medical histories of referred patients and families to determine their risk of hereditary syndromes associated with gastrointestinal cancer
Provide on-going surveillance and risk management advice
Recommend appropriate care
Coordinate the endoscopy surveillance for those individuals participating in our colonoscopy reminder programme
Demonstrate an awareness of the ethical issues related to the medical management of genetic disorders and the psycho-social impact on people of a diagnosis of cancer or a high risk of developing cancer
This role requires a health related degree such as a Masters in Genetic Counselling (or equivalent) with preferred experience in the field of gastroenterology, oncology, colorectal surgery or working with familial cancer syndromes. If you have led your own clinics this will be an advantage but full clinical training and support is provided.
The service is committed to the maintenance of professional accreditation for candidates from a Genetic Counselling background.
