POSITION SUMMARY: This position provides a unique opportunity to serve a wide variety of pediatric, prenatal and adult patients in central and southwest Florida. We are one of three designated centers for the State of Florida Newborn Screening Program and provide genetics services through the state funded Children's Medical Services program. The services are provided at multiple sites in Tampa and outreach satellite sites in central and southwest Florida as well as via telemedicine.
Primary clinical responsibilities include providing genetic counseling services for our pediatric, prenatal and adult patients following established practice guidelines, coordinating genetic testing, and communicating results to patients and referring clinicians. There is frequent interaction and communication with a wide variety of medical professionals, directly through clinical encounters. Teaching opportunities are available in our Genetic Counseling Master's program at USF Health. Position available Full-time or Part-time.
Identify, organize, and summarize pertinent medical and genetic information
Compile complete family history, draw pedigree, assess risk of genetic or hereditary condition and provide counseling to individuals and/or families
Perform literature search, access and summarize information from genetic databases and reference materials. Assist in identifying differential diagnosis and determining patient management needs
Educate patients regarding their genetic risks, explain disease signs and symptoms, prognosis, probability of recurrence, prenatal screening and diagnostic test methods/procedures, alternate courses of action and available options
Facilitate the identification of a course of action for patients and families which seems to them appropriate in view of their risks, family goals, and their cultural, ethical and religious values.
Identify and access appropriate local, regional and national resources and services for individuals and families with genetic disorders
Coordinate ordering of specialized genetic tests and disclosure of results
Obtain informed consent for genetic testing, assess and address possible ethical concerns
Discuss prognosis and management options with patient and develop management plan
Provide written documentation of clinic visit to referring providers
Identify patients for and coordinate patient participation in appropriate research studies
Participate in providing interdisciplinary care with a wide variety of medical specialists, primary care providers, other health professionals, social services, and other community resources.
Make appropriate referrals as needed
Provide specialty consultation to other health care professionals including community physicians and other primary care providers
Participate in education of health care professionals, health sciences students and the general community
Maintain appropriate documentation of all patient related encounters in electronic records
Provide support to the Newborn Screening program
Maintain and expand current knowledge of complex genetic issues. Update and apply new technology and knowledge to clinical practice
Provide services at outreach satellite sites as required
Ensure optimal workflow and service delivery in clinics to achieve excellence in clinical care and high level of patient satisfaction
Identify opportunities and facilitate the development of new/expanded genetic services in our community
Identify and develop research initiatives, participate in preparation of abstracts and manuscripts for publication
Perform other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or other field appropriate to the program content. Bachelor's degree candidates must have at least two years of applicable experience. Master's degree may substitute for the required experience. Board Certification or Eligibility in Genetic Counseling (ABMG, ABGC).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree
Functional Spanish language skills preferred.
Evening and weekend work may be required at times, as well as on-call duty for emergencies.
