The primary function of this position is to provide cancer genetic counseling and risk assessment to individuals and their families at the CHI Memorial Rees Skillern Cancer Institute in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Genetic Counselor works with the High Risk Genetics team under the supervising physician and in collaboration with the physicians of the health system to evaluate patients for hereditary cancer susceptibility and provide comprehensive genetic counseling to these patients and their families. The Genetic Counselor participates in all aspects of the department including patient care, research, community outreach, and education.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provides cancer genetic counseling and risk assessment to patients and their families.
Gathers and reviews pertinent medical records.
Obtains and evaluates personal and medical histories for hereditary cancer susceptibility.
Makes recommendations regarding genetic testing and facilitates patient understanding of their options for genetic testing to allow them to reach informed decisions appropriate for their specific situation and needs.
Obtains informed consent for genetic testing and coordinates genetic testing when appropriate.
Interprets and communicates genetic test results to patients and their providers.
Educates patients, their families, and their providers about hereditary cancer syndromes including the associated cancer risks, inheritance patterns, and medical management options.
Makes recommendations regarding cancer screening and prevention strategies and makes appropriate provider referrals as needed.
Keeps current with developments and advancement in the field of genetic testing and counseling to assure up-to-date information, consultation, and technical assistance is provided.
Assesses patient’s physical, emotional and financial needs to plan for appropriate care.
Provides supportive counseling and emotional support and/or referral to community resources when appropriate.
Identifies research studies and assists with patient recruitment as appropriate.
Maintains accurate and confidential patient records, data, statistics, and reports as required.
Documents clinical encounters and completes genetic counseling letters.
Communicates with referring providers, community resources, and other health care professionals regarding the patient’s condition and options for medical management, care and support.
Develops written educational materials for patients and providers regarding inherited cancer syndromes and predictive testing for cancer susceptibility genes.
Participates in or leads inherited risk support groups as needed.
Participates in program development for the High Risk Genetics Department
Participates in the development of the High Risk Genetics Department through networking with medical providers on a local, regional and national level.
Serves as a resource to patients, families, staff and physicians associated with the Rees Skillern Cancer Institute.
Represents the organization in initiatives on cancer genetics.
Assists with implementation of standards based on various organizational guidelines.
Participates in accredited program’s cancer committee and select cancer conferences.
Provides professional expertise and assistance in the development and maintenance of program policies, procedures and standards.
Assists with ensuring program requirements and standards, such as regulatory requirements, professional practice standards, ethical standards, etc., are kept up to date and meet best practices.
Assists in the development and maintenance of a Patient Policy and Procedures Manual.
Contributes to the efficient operation of the department and supports the High Risk Genetics and Cancer Support Services team.
Provides education and community outreach to health care professionals and the public.
Provides education to health care professionals and the public, including developing and creating brochures, web information, posters, etc.
Conducts educational presentations for health professionals and the public, in response to customer needs and to address new information and technical development in the field of genetic counseling.
Master’s degree or higher in genetic counseling from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited program.
Clinical experience in cancer genetic counseling preferred.
Board certified in genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG); OR
Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
If hired as board-eligible, must obtain requisite certification within one year of date of hire into the position.
Tennessee state genetic counselor licensure, or ability to obtain Tennessee state genetic counselor licensure, by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.
