We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Genetic Counseling Assistant.
The Center for Human Genetics & Genomics is seeking a motivated candidate to fill a new, unique role within the Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti laboratory.
Under the direction of Dr. Chakravarti and daily supervision by a Senior Research Coordinator/ Genetic Counselor, the Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) will provide support to new and established patient-oriented research within the laboratory. The GCA will be responsible for administrative duties related to the development of clinical/basic science research protocols, consent documents, and research reports, with some opportunity to participate in genetics and genomics research. Individuals in this position will gain first-hand knowledge of patient care workflows related to the field of human genetics and genomics spanning multiple subspecialties.
This position may be ideal for someone considering a career in genetic counseling, or in another related healthcare field.
Assist with pre-visit preparation, including collection of relevant medical records and lab reports, medical records review, and coordination of patient intake forms
Assist with packaging and shipping research testing specimens, and preparation of samples for DNA analysis
Follow HIPAA guidelines for the management of patient privacy and confidentiality
Act as a liaison between collaborating centers in defined research studies
Communicate with patients, as necessary, related to appointment
Maintain patient databases for patients in genetics research studies
Maintain stock of testing kits, patient handouts, and other supplies
To qualify you must have a High school Diploma required.
BA/BS in biology, genetics, or related field preferred but not required. Experience working with patients and/or administrative experience in a medical office is a plus.
Proficiency in using various Microsoft Office applications such as World, Excel, Access, Power Point and Outlook. Familiar with Internet applications. Effective oral, written, communication, interpersonal skills.
Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and must work and communicate effectively with both internal and external customers.
Ability to work within a team environment as well as independently. Ability to work and make decisions independently.
Time management skills and ability to multi task.
Strong understanding and knowledge base of coordination requirements associated with clinical/research trials. Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems; ability to work well under pressure. Must be comfortable transporting sealed biological specimens.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
