The primary purpose of the Genetic Counselor position is the delivery genetic counseling services for individuals with genetically caused and predisposed disorders or diagnosed with or at risk for cancers with hereditary genetic components. The Genetic Counselor functions as part of a multidisciplinary team including physicians, Ph.D.s, nurses and other allied health personnel. Counselors work in an interdisciplinary setting, with opportunity for participation in collaborative research efforts in both clinical and community-based settings.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Duties and Responsibilities are cross-referenced to the hospitals Pillars of Excellence and will be transferred to Performance Evaluation. Please include % breakout of tasks/essential functions.
PEOPLE (50%) 1. Provides genetic counseling to individuals identified with predisposing characteristics or at potentially elevated risk for developing cancer. Includes the ability to elicit and interpret individual and family medical and psychosocial histories, provide cancer risk assessment, communicate pertinent disease and risk information clearly, provide counseling regarding genetic testing including the results, and support patients' psychosocial needs. Performs database and primary literature searches as necessary. 2. Provides follow-up to genetic counseling visits as indicated including arranging consultations with other specialists, computerized risk assessment modeling, completing consultation reports, obtaining outside medical records or specimens, facilitating authorization for patients' insurance coverage for genetic testing, telephone communication with patients, facilitating family communication and requesting follow-up visits. Prepares and presents cases at the weekly case review by multidisciplinary team.
QUALITY/SAFETY (5%) 1. Audits adherence to program and hospital initiatives. 2. Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards.
SERVICE (20%) 1. Provides education to the public, students and health care professionals in hereditary cancer and genetic counseling. Supervise students during their cancer genetics rotation, participating in the psychosocial course, and providing student evaluations including the development of appropriate tools to monitor student progress. Identifies and helps develop patient, professional and public education materials and presentations. Provides seminars and presentations as appropriate. 2. Contributes to meeting departmental target for patient satisfaction on unit-based scorecard.
GROWTH/INNOVATION (20%) 1. Assists with clinical studies, particularly in subject recruitment both inside and outside of the institution. Includes developing educational materials, reviewing patient charts, contacting family members when appropriate, and conducting public and professional presentations. Participates in the design, writing or editing of research protocols. Initiates new research projects and works with the multidisciplinary team to implement these projects. 2. Serves as primary contact and liaison for specified clinical departments or research groups. Attends appropriate departmental conferences, tumor boards or meetings. Facilitates the identification of high risk patients for genetic counseling and clinical research protocols. Provides genetic screening and counseling services in other care centers as needed. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Post-baccalaureate degree in genetic counseling or related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 0-3 years experience in risk assessment and counseling for adult onset diseases.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED All hires are required to obtain certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics within 18 months of eligibility
