The Novant Health Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center is looking for a Genetic Counselor to join our team. The genetic counselor provides education, risk assessment, counseling, support, and follow-up to individuals and families who have or may have inherited cancer susceptibility. The genetic counselor functions as a part of a multidisciplinary team including nurse navigators, registered oncology dietitians, counselor, chaplain, physicians, and other allied health professionals.
Genetic Counseling: Provide risk assessment, pedigree construction, and be able to discuss genetic diseases, genetic testing procedures and test results with patients. Work with the medical director and other clinicians regarding care of the patients. Determine what genetic tests are appropriate. Be able to locate a reference lab that can perform the test and facilitate sending the test sample. Document patient results and prepare summary letters as appropriate. Provides patient support and follow-up.
Professional: Assist with marketing of genetic services and provide education to the public and other clinicians. Comply with organization and department policies and procedures, participate in programs and activities to achieve the mission and goals of the department and the organization, and assume responsibility for professional growth and development. Demonstrate effective professional skills and relationship management. Maintain professional competency according to department policies and procedures.
Education: Master's degree in genetic counseling or related field required.
Experience: One year of cancer genetic counseling experience preferred.
Licensure/certification/registration: Board certified or eligible for genetic counseling required. American Board of Genetic Counseling OR the American Board of Medical Genetics required.
Additional skills required: Possess sufficient knowledge to interpret and discuss genetic test procedures, results and genetic diseases in terms understandable by patients. Possess management skills to accept responsibility and make decisions. Promote and maintain compatible working relationships among personnel in the section. Communicate well with other health care professionals, patients and families. Effective communication skills listening, writing, talking, and reading. Ability to maintain patience and confidentiality. Ability to work efficiently and accurately. Ability to organize and plan work.
