Genetic Health Service NZ – (Northern Hub) is one of the three hubs of the New Zealand National Genetic Service. The Northern Hub covers the population in the upper North Island. The service is based at Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand and has a core team of 4 Geneticists and 8 Genetic Counsellors. The service provides consultation for the diagnosis and investigation of inherited and congenital disorders. Through genetic counselling we provide education, information and support to individuals, families and other agencies.
We seek an enthusiastic Genetic Counsellor for a permanent full time position (40 hours per week). As part of our multidisciplinary team you'll manage a caseload of general and cancer cases. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are essential. This is a role for a Counsellor with an MSc in Genetic Counselling, and either certified (Human Genetics Society of Australasia) or board eligible.
You will be responsible for providing coordinated, efficient and quality genetic counselling service to patients and family / Whanau.
Some key accountability include:-
Determine the patients understanding of referral and give information on genetic mechanisms
Record family pedigrees clearly and legibly.
Participate in intake phone calls with patients
Gather clinical information, family consent and laboratory information as required by Geneticists and Senior Genetic Counsellors.
Accurately elicit the questions/advice by the patient and by the referrer.
Accurately prepare clinical letters, documenting issues, outcomes and recommendations arising from the consultation. Ability to refer to other specialties where needed.
Obtain documentation to confirm family history or diagnosis details where necessary. Obtain informed consent for genetic testing/release of information to ensure patients and/or family agree with proposed management where necessary
