Shodair Children’s Hospital in Helena, Montana, has an immediate opening for the full-time position of a Genetic Counselor to join our growing Medical Genetics Department. The position involves providing comprehensive counseling and genetic risk assessment at our local and outreach clinics, clinical documentation, and coordination of genetic testing. It includes the opportunity to work with Native American and Hutterite patient populations. Our genetic counselors also serve as liaisons between patients, medical geneticists, and laboratory, and are a resource to providers and residents across Montana and bordering states.
Opportunities for public and professional education include teaching genetic counseling students, college students and nurses, and we regularly host medical students through the WWAMI program of the University of Washington, a nationally and internationally recognized model for training physicians and other health professionals for rural areas.
A suitable candidate will have strong teamwork and interpersonal skills. Moderate travelling is expected. Required qualifications include a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling and board certification or active candidate status to sit for the exam to become certified by the American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC).
Master’s degree in genetic counseling. Board certified or board eligible (BC/BE) from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Must possess skills in oral and written communication as well as ability to review, collect and analyze data, and work with computers. Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to develop and maintain good relations with internal and external physicians, laboratory staff, patients, and general public. Valid Montana driver’s license required.

The Medical Genetics Program at Shodair is a nationally recognized program with a rich history of providing clinical genetic services for families across Montana. We enjoy a team environment with close integration of clinical genetics, molecular diagnostics, and cytogenetics under one roof.
Join our team of four Genetic Counselors, two Clinical Geneticists, a Clinical Psychologist, a Dietician and our genetic laboratory staff. The department provides consultation for approximately 1,000 patients per year and is responsible for newborn screening follow up within the State of Montana. Clinical services encompass the full spectrum of genetics including prenatal, pediatric, adult, cancer, as well as fetal pathology. Families are seen at our clinic in Helena and outreach clinics throughout Montana. We also have a growing telegenetics program. Funding is provided in part through the State of Montana Medical Genetics Program. Shodair Children’s Hospital, the only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Montana, is a private nonprofit organization. The majority of genetic testing including Next Generation Sequencing is done onsite in our state-of-the-art laboratory. Our lab offers the full spectrum of cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic as well as molecular genetic and genomic services.
