Genuine opportunity to ‘make a difference!
In New Zealand, bowel cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and we have one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world. More than 2800 people are diagnosed every year. It is the second highest cause of cancer related death and more than 1200 people die each year from the disease. Bowel cancer can be successfully treated and prevented. The earlier the risk of bowel cancer is diagnosed the higher the likelihood of successful preventative treatment.
Nationally funded by the Ministry of Health, the New Zealand Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service (NZFGCS) targets eligible New Zealanders’ at high risk to prevent avoidable bowel cancer. Our multidisciplinary team of family history assessors, gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons are the key clinical workforce to identify, assess and manage people with familial or inherited gastrointestinal cancer syndromes. The team provides education, information and support to affected families, including medical management advice and registration on a surveillance programme.
