The Genetic Counsellor is a health professional with specialized training and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counselling. Genetic Counsellors work as members of a healthcare team, providing individuals and families with information on the nature, inheritance and implications of genetic disorders to help them make informed medical and personal decisions. Genetic Counsellors help people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of how genetics contributes to disease. They also serve as patient advocates and refer individuals and families to available support services. Genetic Counsellors serve as educators and resource people for other healthcare professionals and for the general public.
Masters Degree in Genetic Counselling from an accredited university required.
Certification with or eligible to be certified with the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) or American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) preferred
Minimum one year recent, related genetic counselling experience in a clinical setting required; recent cancer genetic counselling experience preferred.
Demonstrated working knowledge of clinical genetics
Proficiency in Microsoft office suite, PowerPoint and data entry and retrieval.
A valid Ontario Drivers License and access to a reliable vehicle.
Ability to communicate in the French Language would be an asset.
