The Infants and Children's Hospital of Brooklyn at Maimonides Medical Center, Division of Medical Genetics, has a full time position available for a BC/BE Pediatric Genetic Counselor. The position entails counseling pediatric and adult clinical genetics patients. The successful candidate will work closely with the medical geneticist, a genetic counseling assistant and other support staff. He/she will be responsible for providing counseling; obtaining and reviewing medical records; and eliciting personal and family health histories. He/she will also be responsible for communicating with patients and healthcare professionals to discuss test results; liaison with patients and laboratories regarding insurance coverage for testing, and aiding in professional development of genetic counseling interns, medical students and other healthcare providers.
Additional responsibilities Include:
Educating referring community healthcare providers about genetic testing and diagnosis of patients
Providing scheduled telephone on-call service for inpatients admitted to Maimonides NICU, PICU, inpatient floor and newborn nursery.
Teaching core curriculum genetics classes for pediatric residents and medical students and collaborating in providing supervision for residents and students during genetics rotations
Collaborating in submitting data for abstracts or presentations at major genetics meetings and/or manuscripts for publication.
Coordinating reports on Divisional activities including gathering of data and records.
To qualify, you must have a Master's degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program or equivalent; be board certified/eligible; and possess the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Effective organizational, communication, and computer skills are a must. Prior genetic counseling job experience and/or fluency in a foreign language are preferred.
