This position is responsible for prenatal, pediatric and adult genetic counseling in both clinic and hospital settings. The genetic counselor also works with medical geneticists, non-geneticist physicians in the diagnosis and management of patients.
The genetics counselor participates in teaching a medical genetics course for second year medical students as well as teaching and supervising allied health students, medicals students, and residents completing genetic rotations.
Some administrative responsibilities, such as assisting with the scheduling of patients referred to Medical Genetics, are required of the genetic counselor.
Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited training program and Board Certification or eligibility from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
