The role of the Reproductive Genetic Counselor will be to provide comprehensive genetic counseling services to individuals and families seeking information about reproductive genetic susceptibility conditions and to provide risk assessment for familial reproductive genetic related issues. The genetic counselor practices as a part of a genetic service team, communicating genetic, medical and technical information with the knowledge and insight into the psychosocial and cultural experiences important to each patient and family.
Provides genetic counseling services, evaluates patient and family health educational needs, initiates appropriate reproductive genetics risk assessment and testing for reproductive genetic disorders
Assess the needs of patients, significant others and family members. Obtains insurance preauthorization, drafts letters of medical necessity and processes billing.
Facilitate appropriate medical and psychosocial follow-up for high-risk patients and their families. Acts as a patient or family advocate. Documents care/teaching consistent with documentation guidelines and regulatory standards.
Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services. Attends and presents relevant reproductive genetics information at grand rounds and other healthcare venues.
Coordinates and prepares multidisciplinary Conferences in collaborations with Nurse Navigator.
Participates in any other clinical activity related to reproductive genetics for each specific subspecialty service related to management of each patient.
Performs duties requested by manager and/or medical director.
Expectation that with expansion of reproductive genetics services there will be an obligation of multi-location counseling services.
Education: Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling. Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counselors required.
Experience: Reproductive genetic experience preferred. Minimum of two years of experience in clinical genetic services in maternal and fetal reproductive genetics preferred.
Skills & Abilities: Excellent communication skills to counsel patients. Computer knowledge and basic data retrieval.
