Position Summary: The Genetic Counselor is responsible for the delivery of services and resources for the genetic counseling, evaluation and follow-up services for individuals and family members suspected to have an inherited predisposition to cancer.
In this role you will:
Analyze genetic information to identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders and syndromes
Write detailed consultative reports to provide information on complex genetic concepts for patients or referring physicians
Discuss testing options and the associated risk factors, benefits, and limitations with patients and families
Interview patients to obtain comprehensive medical histories and document the findings
Interpret laboratory results and communicate findings to patients or physicians
Counsel patients and family members by providing information, education, or reassurance regarding genetic risks and inherited conditions
Determine patient treatment plans by reviewing laboratory work, literature, and patient histories
Skillfully communicate complex results to patients and families with an emphasis on understanding the recommendations and associated implications
Utilize strong communication skills to effectively address conflicting views or barriers and mediate equitable solutions
Participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in genetics and genomics
Participate in clinical cancer genetics research development and implementation
Graduate of an accredited Genetic Counseling Program with Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling
Board Certified or board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABCG) or American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG)
Knowledge acquired through education and/or work experience in Cancer Services Department or Cancer Genetics Counseling preferred
Successful Completion of clinical rotation in an accredited Genetic Counseling Training Program
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in genetic counseling preferred
Proficiency with EMR systems
CITI Training (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) preferred
