Genetic counselors work as members of a health care team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or a genetic disorder and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. They identify families at risk, investigate the condition present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family.
Genetic counselors provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates and refer families to community services. They serve as educators and resources for other health care professionals and for the general public. Many participate in research related to medical genetics and genetic counseling.
Education: Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling
Certification: Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or Board Eligible and obtains certification within 3 years of hire date.
Experience: Preferred but not required.
Skills/Other: The following skills are required: ability to keep up with the rapidly changing principles and practices in the fields of medical genetics and genetic counseling; effective oral and written communication skills; exemplary organizational and teaching skills; ability to function independently and as part of a team; ability to identify appropriate resources; excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to interact appropriately with individuals from a broad range of socioeconomic, educational, cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
