Provides general pre- and post-testing support for genetic testing. Collects appropriate clinical and family information from clients necessary for scheduling of appropriate tests, proper interpretation of test results and preparation of final reports.
Directs the genetic counseling of patients with hemophilia, related bleeding disorders, and hereditary thrombosis at the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania.Provides genetic counseling and family planning information for pregnant women of families affected by congenital bleeding or thrombotic disorders.Elicits and documents family history of bleeding/thrombotic disorders.Explains diagnostic and screening tests and reproductive options including associated risks, benefits, and limitations.Obtains appropriate informed consent for genetic testing of patients and families at the Hemophilia Center of Western PA.
Reviews results of testing with families, including informative and non-informative data, and implications for future offspring.Prepares reports, correspondence, and maintains charts with genetic information. Works with psychosocial staff to assure care and clarity in discussion with families.Maintains an updated pedigree for each affected patient/family.Provides education to families and staff and for chapter and community agencies regarding inheritance of bleeding and clotting disorders.
Education and Training
Master's degree in Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling from a training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling(ABGC).
Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
PA Genetic Counseling license; newly hired employees who do not have a PA license must be eligible to apply for a PA Genetic Counseling license and must obtain this license within two years of hire date..
Two years preferred clinical experience as a board eligible genetic counselor.
