The Genetic Counselor demonstrates expertise in genetic evaluation and counseling of individuals and families. Responsible for patient/family genetic education, review of prior medical records, tracking of division metrics, and participating in genetic research projects. Works in collaboration with medical, nursing, and support services to provide family centered care.
Obtains comprehensive patient assessment, which includes history and constructing family pedigree to develop an appropriate plan of care in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Completes appropriate documentation in the medical record and counseling letters to communicate pertinent information to the clinical team and families
Conducts genetic counseling which includes, but is not limited to diagnosis, etiology, inheritance, recurrence risks, genetic/medical testing and follow-up to provide disease specific information to patient/families
Assists in maintaining division databases to track patient follow-up and plan of care
Assists with coordination of testing to manage the patient experience
Effectively communicates with physicians and clinical team, including community/referring physicians to ensure a timely exchange of information
Participates in continuing education and professional development activities to enhance current knowledge base
Takes an active role in medical resident clinical education to share expertise and enhance the learner experience
Contributes to division research activities to advance scientific knowledge

Master’s level degree from an ACGC-accredited graduate Genetic Counseling Training Program
Board-Eligible or Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling; new graduates have 2 years from graduation to obtain certification
