The Counselor is responsible for counseling individuals and/or families considering undergoing genetic testing by helping them identify their risks for certain disorders, investigating family health history, interpreting, screening test information and determining if additional testing is needed. Working closely with the Medical Genetics and Genomics physicians, the Genetic Counselor helps people to understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to diseases. The Genetic Counselor provides information on genetic testing options and the implications of undergoing genetic testing. The role holder also addresses psychosocial and ethical issues associated with genetic disorders and/or genetic test results.
Bachelor’s degree plus Master’s degree in accredited Genetic Counseling program
Board certified by the American and/or Canadian Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC/CBGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) preferred
3 + years of experience in Genetic Counseling, with experience in Pediatric or Prenatal Genetic Counseling
Demonstrated experience in clinical genetics, cytogenetic and molecular genetics coupled with psychosocial theory, ethics and counseling techniques
