Master of Science in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC) accredited institution. Individuals must be board certified or have active candidate status to sit for the exam to become certified by the American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC).
Individuals who have graduated from an accredited program must apply for active candidate status and must take and pass the exam within the approved exam cycle to achieve certification.
One year of clinical experience in order to a) become proficient in providing counseling b) develop a thorough knowledge of genetic disorders c) become familiar with research developments with potential application in clinical setting. An accredited degree granting program should include this experience.
Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
Analytical ability necessary to collect and analyze data interpret laboratory tests and information and perform various research and retrieval duties.
Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to counsel patients and families.
Possesses effective educational techniques required to conduct lectures and seminars, advise students and interact with health care professionals.
Should demonstrate knowledge of principles of human genetics include inheritance patterns, teratology, cytogenetics, diagnostic testing and genetic terminology.
