The Genetic Counselor is a mid-level healthcare professional who works to identify hereditary conditions in patients and their families, and educates families and other healthcare providers about the cause, inheritance pattern and medical management of these conditions. S/he will work as a part of the medical genetics team at Children's. The role works collaboratively with a clinical geneticist, to evaluate patients with complex medical problems which may have a hereditary component, including Neuromuscular disorders. In addition, there are opportunities to work independently, with physician supervision when appropriate, to evaluate patients with single or isolated birth defects, known genetic conditions, or to perform screening, triage, testing or other activities.
Successful completion of a Master's Degree Program in Genetic Counseling. ABGC Board Certified/Board Eligible Genetic Counselor must be board certified within 18 months of employment. Experience in genetic counseling, including but not limited to pediatrics, prenatal and general clinical genetics is desired.
